What are cookies
Cookies are small strings of data sent by the website visited to the user’s computer or mobile device (usually through the browser), where they are stored before being sent back to the same websites on the user’s next visit. During website navigation, users may also receive cookies on their device sent from other websites or web servers (known as “third parties”), which contain the features (such as, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to other domain pages) from the website that the user is visiting.
Types of cookie
Cookies are separated into two categories:
Technical cookies are those used solely “to transmit a communication or provide a specific service as requested by a subscriber or user” (see Article 122, paragraph 1, of the Italian Personal Data Protection Code). They are not used for other purposes and are normally installed directly by the website owner or operator. They can be divided into navigation or session cookies, which allow normal navigation and use of the website (for example, letting you make a purchase or log into a restricted area); analytical cookies, which are similar to technical cookies when used directly by the website operator to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they use the website; functional cookies, which improve the browsing experience by allowing the user to select specific criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase). Prior consent is not required for installation of these cookie, while the obligation to provide information pursuant to Art. 13 of the Italian Personal Data Protection Code remains.
Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and are used to send targeted advertising messages according to the user’s expressed preferences in the context of internet navigation. Due to their invasive nature in user’s privacy, European and Italian legislation requires that the user be adequately informed about their use and give their consent to the use of profiling cookies.
